Stepping Into the Unknown
“All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him.” Song of Songs 3:1-4
When we first came to know Jesus as our Saviour, it was because He was revealed to us by the Father through the Holy Spirit. As John the Evangelist writes, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We beheld His glory, the glory of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” That which was beyond our reach came near. The invisible was revealed. This is how we begin our first steps of faith: we walk in the light as He is in the light.
And yet, there is a place beyond comprehension that requires a different compass than the one to which we have grown accustomed. It remains our ultimate destiny in Christ, the place where union with the Bridegroom awaits.
When the Lord seems far away, it is often an illusion born from the limitations of our natural perception. He promised never to leave us nor forsake us. Why then does the assurance of faith with which we began sometimes seem to falter? Why does the confidence of knowing Christ appear to wane beneath the shadow of uncertainty?
Beloved, do not be afraid. There comes a time when we must leave behind familiar frameworks and rhythms and yield ourselves to the silence of God. It is there, beyond the reach of reason and sensory certainty, that the spirit is lifted into the unknown and ineffable habitation of God. In that holy unknowing, faith is no longer sustained by sight or feeling, but by love alone. And there, hidden with Christ, the soul discovers that the One who seemed distant was nearer than life itself.
